Iceland Landscapes

Iceland | Sandar
Iceland | Snaefellsvegur

Iceland is one of my favourite places in the world. The sheer scale and majesty of the landscapes, and how quickly the weather changes, leading to cloud and sky drama.

A May / June snowfall also changes the landscape, an icing sugar dusting of white to contrast the rock formations. The snowline is often really sharp, which also makes for interesting colour changes, from brown / green to white.

The speed the weather changes can mean you are standing in bright sunshine watching it snow / rain / hail a few kilometers / miles away.

Settings and Approach

Depending on scale / epicness, anything from 14mm upwards.

Aperture Priority, set to f/22 or f/3.5 depending on light conditions

Challenges: Not overexposing the snow when the sun is on it. I pick a small area of interest below the snowline, for example, the waterfalls in the pictures directly above and below, and stop down using my EV (exposure compensation), to balance the whole image.

I will also often focus on the clouds (using f/22) to get the drama.
